My Story
Travis J. Groth completed his bachelor’s degree in biology at Maryville College in his hometown of Maryville, TN in 2006. He then enjoyed a year living on Hilton Head Island waiting tables and fishing daily on the surf and lagoons. He started his medical training at Lincoln Memorial University-DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine (LMU-DCOM) in Harrogate, TN in 2007 and graduated in the inaugural class in 2011. He then moved to Gray, TN with his wife Jennifer and 2 dogs and completed residency at Kingsport Family Medicine Residency program. He is board certified through American Board of Osteopathic Family Physicians (Tennessee license number 2422).
As a child raised in East Tennessee, I loved the great outdoors. My passion for nature and animals was fueled by my parents who let me keep many varieties of creatures including snakes, turtles, frogs, fish, spiders (they didn’t know about those), dogs, cats, goats. My passion early in life was to become a veterinarian as I loved all animals and insects. However, my passions changed over time as I saw my grandparents and other family members struggle with complex health issues. I realized around the age of 13 that I wanted to be a doctor so I could help the people I cared most about. My drive to pursue medicine was relentless, and despite some setbacks along the way, I pushed on. As I was finishing up senior year of college, Dr Drew Crain introduced me to a local otorhinolaryngologist (ENT) -Dr Guy Garmen. I was fascinated by his ability to palpate the smallest of glands and tissues in the Operating room. I was completely sold on Osteopathic medicine!
This led me to LMU-DCOM in the small town of Harrogate, Tennessee where I was taught by some of the best Osteopaths in the country. Over the course of 4 years, my love of medicine and Osteopathic principles continued to grow. Because I loved everything in medicine, I chose to pursue a career in family medicine that would allow me to see a large variety of disease and illnesses. I also found a love for Osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) which is the art of helping the person, as a mind, body, and spirit unit working to heal itself through self-regulation and health maintenance. Understanding that structure (the human body) and function are reciprocally interrelated and that rational treatment is based upon the understanding of the basic principles that the body will always seek for self-regulation and wellness.
As I continued my career in residency in Kingsport, Tennessee, my life truly changed when I was blessed with my first daughter. She was a whopping 3lbs 12ounces. My wife and I also suffered some tremendous losses which has helped shape my faith and priorities. Currently I have 3 daughters that keep me on my toes. We live on a “small farm” and enjoy raising cattle, chickens, bees, and a small garden.
Through all my struggles and success in life, I hope to help patients find health and happiness. I truly believe that each person can achieve the quality of life they desire, and I hope to offer guidance and direction on their journey to health.
Meet Nurse Jen
After spending more than a decade as a stay-at-home mom, I’m excited to be returning to nursing at our very own direct primary care practice. I bring prior experience in primary care, nutrition, hormone replacement, and aesthetics.
I’m very passionate about supporting patients through thoughtful, personalized care. It’s incredibly meaningful to work alongside my husband as he pursues his dream of owning a practice rooted in accessibility, connection, and whole-person health.
While being a Mom will always come first – I’m excited to add nursing back into my life, and can’t wait to start this new chapter!
